These are old photos of mine, taken in May 2001, when I walked out to the lighthouse on the island’s SW tip. Here the granite that forms the headland is a pretty pink colour and down at the waterline it’s battered and smoothed into fantastic shapes by the sea. There is nothing between us and the coast of the US at this part of the island so the waves carry the full force of the Atlantic. A claxon rings to warn that the causeway to the lighthouse is about to be covered by the incoming tide and when it does you’d better get your skates on and get moving back to the safety of the dry land.
I took these on a hot and very bright day when the sun was directly overhead (beggars can’t be choosers when it comes to tide times and trips to the lighthouse), so they aren’t the best quality images. However, I thought it might be fun to share them. I immediately saw shapes in the rocks. Can you? There has to be a name for that …seeing shapes in inanimate objects…but I can’t find it anywhere. It’s one of the very rare occasions when a Google search has failed me. If you know the word, please tell.
It’s a long weekend here in the UK, and don’t you over in the States have a similarly extended weekend? Whatever you’re up to, have fun.
